A dirt track winding through stony hills towards snow-capped mountains at sunset

One free day from Marrakech: which desert or day trip fits?

One day is enough to leave the city behind, but not enough to reach sand. The choice is between a stony desert at sunset and a day out to the mountains, a waterfall or the coast.

Short answer

A one-day desert trip from Marrakech means Agafay: a stony desert 45–60 min away, best at sunset with dinner, and you can sleep there and be back by mid-morning. There are no sand dunes within a day's reach. If you would rather see water or mountains, Ouzoud, Ourika, Imlil and Essaouira each fill one day.

The one-day desert option: Agafay

Agafay is 35 km from Marrakech: rocky hills, open views of the Atlas, camps with dinner and the option to stay overnight. It takes an afternoon and evening, which leaves your morning free for the medina.

Set your expectations before you go. There is no sand here, and the Agafay guide explains what you will actually see and how to pick a camp. On Civitatis, an Agafay night with dinner starts at around €55; prices change.

Day trips that fit in one day

If desert scenery without dunes does not appeal, these day trips leave in the morning and bring you back in the evening. Road times are one way, without stops.

  • Ourika valley, 1–1.5 h: the closest mountain valley, with the Setti Fatma waterfalls. Busy at weekends.
  • Imlil and the Atlas, 1–1.5 h: Berber villages and walks below Toubkal (4,167 m). The three-valleys tour starts at around €18.
  • Ouzoud falls, 2.5–3 h: waterfalls of about 110 m and Barbary macaques. From around €15.
  • Essaouira, 2.5–3 h: an Atlantic port with a walled medina. Often windy. From around €15.
  • Aït Ben Haddou, 3–3.5 h: the UNESCO-listed ksar over the Tichka pass. The longest day of the list.

How to choose your one day

Look at the road time first. Ourika, Imlil and Agafay are the short drives. Ouzoud and Essaouira take 2.5–3 h each way, and Aït Ben Haddou longer still, so they make for a long day.

Then pick by what you miss most in the city: shade and water (Ouzoud, Ourika), cooler air and walking (Imlil), sea breeze and fish lunches (Essaouira), or wide-open space at dusk (Agafay). The day trips guide compares them in more detail.

What does not fit in one day

Zagora is 6–7 h away and Merzouga around 9–10 h, each way. A same-day return to either would be a day in a minibus with an hour in the desert. If a one-day tour from Marrakech advertises Sahara dunes, it is almost certainly Agafay, so read the itinerary.

If you can stretch to two days, the options change: see two days from Marrakech.

How it runs

  1. Morning

Medina, a garden or a hammam

Keep the morning in Marrakech. A hammam before a desert evening is a good way to slow down.

  2. Afternoon

    Drive to Agafay

Pickup in mid-afternoon, then 45–60 min on the road. A camel or quad ride if your programme includes one.

  3. Evening

    Sunset, dinner, back or stay

Watch the hills turn orange, have dinner in the camp, then return to the city or sleep there and drive back after breakfast.

Questions people ask

Can you do a desert trip from Marrakech in one day?

Yes, to Agafay, a stony desert 45–60 min from the city. Most trips cover sunset and dinner, and some include a night in a camp. You will not see sand dunes.

Can you go to the Sahara and back in one day from Marrakech?

Not in any sensible way. The nearest Saharan dunes, near Zagora, are 6–7 h away by road, each way. Plan at least two days for them.

What is the best day trip from Marrakech?

It depends on what you want. Ouzoud for waterfalls, Essaouira for the coast, Imlil for mountain walks, Ourika for the shortest drive and Agafay for a desert sunset.

Ouzoud or Essaouira for a day trip?

Both take 2.5–3 h or so each way. Choose Ouzoud for waterfalls, hiking paths and macaques, and Essaouira for a medina by the sea and seafood. Essaouira is often windy, so bring a layer.

Is a hot-air balloon flight worth fitting into one day?

It takes the early morning, with pickup before dawn, and leaves the rest of the day free. Flights can be cancelled for wind, so do not save it for your last morning.
