Two days from Marrakech: Zagora, or something closer?
Two days is the first point at which sand dunes become possible. Whether they are worth two long drives is the real question.

Short answer
A 2-day desert tour from Marrakech goes to Zagora: 6–7 h each way over the Atlas, a night in a camp and small dunes. If you would rather not spend most of both days driving, an Agafay night plus a day trip to Ouzoud or Essaouira gives you a desert evening with far less road. Merzouga in two days is too rushed.
Option 1: the 2-day Zagora desert tour
The standard two-day tour crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stops at Aït Ben Haddou, follows the Drâa valley and reaches a camp near Zagora for sunset. You sleep in the desert, watch the sunrise and drive back the next day.
You get real sand, but in small dune fields, and around 6–7 h on the road each way. On Civitatis it starts at around €68 per person; prices change. The Zagora guide covers camps and what the dunes look like.
Option 2: an Agafay night plus a day trip
Spend one day on a day trip, then the next afternoon and evening in Agafay, with dinner and a night in camp if your schedule allows the following morning. Total road time is a fraction of the Zagora tour.
You trade sand dunes for variety: waterfalls at Ouzoud or the sea at Essaouira, then a stony desert at sunset. This suits you if the camp night matters more than the dunes.
Option 3: two day trips, no desert
If the desert was only one idea among many, two separate days out may give you more. Pair a long one with a short one so you are not in a car for two full days.
Ouzoud or Essaouira for the long day, Ourika or Imlil for the short one. The day trips from Marrakech page compares all of them.
Why Merzouga in 2 days rarely works
Merzouga is around 560 km from Marrakech, 9–10 h of driving each way. A two-day trip means leaving at dawn, reaching the dunes at dusk and starting the drive back the next morning, with almost no break from the vehicle.
Some operators do sell it. If Erg Chebbi is the goal, find one more day and read three days from Marrakech instead.

Questions people ask
Is a 2-day desert tour from Marrakech worth it?
It is if you want a night in a desert camp with some sand around it and you do not mind long drives. If big dunes are the goal, a third day for Merzouga is a better use of your time.
Can you do Merzouga in 2 days from Marrakech?
It is possible on some tours, but you would spend almost all of both days driving for one short evening and morning on the dunes. We recommend three days as the minimum.
What is the difference between a 2-day and a 3-day desert tour?
A 2-day tour goes to Zagora, with small dunes. A 3-day tour goes to Merzouga and the much larger Erg Chebbi dunes, with an extra night in the Dades area on the way.
Zagora or Agafay for two days?
Zagora if you want sand under your feet and do not mind about 6–7 h of driving each way. Agafay plus a day trip if you prefer short drives and more variety.
What should I pack for one night in a desert camp?
A warm layer for the night, a torch, sun protection, a power bank and a small bag for the camp. The planning tools include a packing checklist.
