Trips and activities around Marrakech
This isn't a full city guide. It covers what's worth booking ahead from Marrakech: the desert, day trips and a few activities that come with a pickup time.

Short answer
Beyond the medina, the things worth planning are a desert trip (Agafay for an evening, Zagora in two days, Merzouga in three), a day trip to the Atlas, Ouzoud or Essaouira, and short activities: quad biking, a camel ride, a sunrise balloon flight or a hammam. Decide the desert first, because it takes the most days, then fit the rest around it.
You have a few free days in Marrakech and want to spend at least one of them outside the city.
You're after the souks, palaces and gardens: this page skips the medina sights on purpose.
Palmeraie or Agafay, how long a session lasts, what to wear and the safety checks to make before you ride.
Palmeraie or Agafay for a sunset hour, real dunes only further away, and how to tell if the camels are looked after.
Pre-dawn pickup, a sunrise flight north of the city, and what usually happens when the wind cancels it.
Public neighbourhood hammam or spa, what happens step by step, what to bring and the etiquette for each.
Rocky hills and a camp dinner 45–60 min from the city. No sand dunes, but no long drive either.
Ouzoud, Essaouira, Ourika, Imlil, Aït Ben Haddou or Agafay: which day trip fits your interests and your road time.
The medina, the souks, the gardens and the palaces fill your first days, and plenty of city guides cover them well. Duneto starts where the city ends: experiences that need transport, a booking or an early alarm, and that compete for the same free days.
Everything below happens outside the walls, apart from the hammam, which is easier to plan than to stumble into.
Agafay is a stony desert 45–60 min from the city, done in an afternoon or one night. Zagora, 350 km away, has modest dunes and needs two days. The big dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga need three days, or four at a gentler pace.
If sand dunes matter to you, that's two or three days gone, so settle it first. The desert comparison puts the three side by side.
One free day without the desert is enough for a mountain valley, a waterfall or the coast. The Ourika valley and Imlil are the closest, around 1–1.5 h away. The Ouzoud falls take 2.5–3 h each way, and Essaouira on the Atlantic about the same. Aït Ben Haddou is the longest day, over the Tichka pass.
The day trips from Marrakech page compares them by road time and by what you're interested in.
These fit a morning or an afternoon with the transfer included, so they slot in around everything else.
Count only the days with nothing booked, then fill them in this order: desert, day trip, activities.
A day trip to the Ourika valley, Imlil, the Ouzoud falls or Essaouira, or an afternoon and evening in the Agafay desert. Half-day activities such as quad biking or a hammam fit around any of them.
No. Merzouga is 560 km away, 9–10 h each way, so it needs at least three days. In one day the realistic desert option is Agafay, which is stony and has no dunes.
Yes, if you go for the space, the sunset and the quiet rather than for dunes. It's the only desert that fits one day from Marrakech without a very long drive.
Multi-day desert tours and balloon flights, since places and launch slots are limited and you want room to rebook if the weather cancels a flight. Hammams and short quad tours are easier to arrange a day or two ahead.
One for Agafay, two for Zagora and three for Merzouga, on top of your days in the city. How many days you need goes through each option.
