How many days do you need for the desert from Marrakech?

Start with the number of free days you really have, not the desert you would like to see. The days decide the landscape, and the road decides the days.

Short answer

How many days you need for the desert from Marrakech depends on the landscape you want. One day or night is enough for Agafay, which has no dunes. Two days reach Zagora and its small dunes. Three days are the minimum for the big Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, and four make that trip calmer or let you finish in Fes.

1 day

Agafay at sunset, or a day out to Ouzoud, Essaouira, Ourika, Imlil or Aït Ben Haddou. No dunes fit in one day.

Palm groves and a walled path in the Drâa valley, with low sand dunes and mountains in the distance 02

2 days

Zagora's camp night and small dunes, or an Agafay night plus a day trip. And why Merzouga in two days is a bad deal.

3 days

The classic 3-day Merzouga tour to Erg Chebbi, a version ending in Fes, and gentler plans for people who dislike long drives.

A slower Merzouga tour, the Marrakech to Fes desert route, or an Agafay night with day trips. Four ways to use four days.

How many days for the desert: what each extra day buys

Each extra day moves you further from Marrakech and into a different landscape. Here is the short version, with a full page for each option.

  • 1 day: Agafay at sunset, or a day trip to Ouzoud, Essaouira, Ourika or Imlil. No sand dunes.
  • 2 days: Zagora with a camp night and small dunes, or an Agafay night plus a day trip.
  • 3 days: Merzouga and Erg Chebbi, the classic big-dune tour, or a gentler mix of shorter trips.
  • 4 days: Merzouga with more breathing room, a 3-day route ending in Fes, or several shorter trips.

Why most of the days go on driving

Agafay is 45–60 min from the city. Zagora is 6–7 h each way, Merzouga around 9–10 h. On the two longer tours, the drive takes far more daylight than the desert itself.

The road is not wasted time: the Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou, the Drâa valley and the gorges are part of what you pay for. But if the drive bores you, more days in the car will not feel like more holiday. Our desert comparison sets the three side by side.

Count your free days honestly

Desert tours leave early in the morning and come back in the evening. Your arrival day and your departure day rarely count, unless you land early and fly late.

Leave a buffer before a flight. A tour returning from Zagora or Merzouga can arrive hours later than planned, so avoid flying out the same evening.

When fewer days is the better plan

Three days for one desert night is a fair trade if dunes are your priority. If they are not, the same three days could give you an Agafay night, the Ouzoud falls and the coast at Essaouira, each with a short drive. Browse the day trips from Marrakech before you commit.

Season matters too. Summer heat in the south and cold winter nights in the camps both change how a long drive feels, so check the month before you choose.

Questions people ask

How many days do you need for the Sahara from Marrakech?

Three days at least for the big dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, which are around 560 km away. Two days are enough for the smaller dunes near Zagora.

Is 2 days enough for the desert from Marrakech?

Yes for Zagora: one camp night, small dunes and the drive over the Atlas. Not for Merzouga, where two days mean almost all your time in the vehicle.

Is a 3-day desert tour from Marrakech worth it?

If you want the tall dunes, it is the shortest sensible way to see them. Expect two long driving days and one night in the camp, with a night in the Dades area on the way.

Is 4 days too long for a desert tour from Marrakech?

Not if you want a slower pace or more time near the dunes. If you are heading on to Fes, a three-day tour that ends there uses the same time better.

Can I see the desert in one day from Marrakech?

You can see Agafay, a stony desert 45–60 min away, in an afternoon or evening. You cannot reasonably reach sand dunes and come back in one day.
