Imlil and the High Atlas

A mountain village in a valley of walnut trees and the starting point for Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. On a day trip you come for the walks and the views, not the summit.

Short answer

Yes, if you want real mountain scenery and a walk without a long drive. Imlil is 65 km from Marrakech, about 1–1.5 h each way, so a day trip leaves several hours for walking between villages. It suits walkers of most levels. Toubkal (4,167 m) is a different trip: the climb normally takes two days with a licensed guide.

Choose it if

Choose it if you want a mountain walk, cooler air and village life, with an easy drive back the same day.

Think twice if

Think twice if you hope to reach Toubkal's summit in a day, or if steep, rocky paths are hard for you.

What you actually see

The road climbs through Asni into the Mizane valley and ends at Imlil. Walnut and apple trees line the river, and villages of stone and earth houses step up the slopes.

Most day walks go to nearby villages such as Aroumd and back, or up to a pass with views of the high peaks. From winter into spring the summits are often white with snow.

The area was hit by the September 2023 earthquake. Rebuilding has continued since, but some villages still show damage, so ask your operator which routes are open.

How the day runs

Tours leave Marrakech in the morning and cover 65 km, about 1–1.5 h, often with a stop in the foothills. In Imlil you meet a local mountain guide for a walk of a few hours, usually with lunch or tea in a village house.

You're back in Marrakech by late afternoon or early evening. The walking is on dirt and rocky paths with some steady climbs. Nothing technical, but it's real exercise at altitude.

Some tours sold as 'three valleys' trips combine Imlil or Asni with other Atlas valleys. They give you more road and less trail, so pick a single-valley trip if walking is the point.

Guided tour or going on your own

A tour handles transport and the guide in one booking. On your own, you can take a grand taxi to Asni and change there for Imlil, or hire a taxi for the whole day. Hire a local guide in Imlil for anything beyond the village paths.

Toubkal has its own rules: trekkers heading for the summit must go with a licensed mountain guide, and you may be asked for your passport on the way. Rules change, so check the current ones before you go.

The climb itself is a separate trip. Most people walk up to the refuge on day one and go for the summit early on day two. Don't try to squeeze it into a day out from Marrakech.

What to check before booking

Shoes with grip matter more than anything else. Even in summer, bring a warm layer: it's cooler than Marrakech and mountain weather changes fast.

  • The walking time and how much climbing is involved, not just the hours away from Marrakech
  • Whether lunch and the mountain guide are included
  • For a 'three valleys' tour, how much of the day you spend on foot
  • The mountain forecast, especially between November and March

Best season

Spring and autumn give the best walking: clear air, mild days and, in spring, snow on the peaks above green fields. Summer is a welcome break from the city heat, though the midday sun on the slopes is strong.

In winter, snow can reach the village and paths can ice over. Short walks still work on settled days, but Toubkal becomes a winter climb that needs crampons and experience. The seasonal guide explains what each month brings.

Questions people ask

Can you do Imlil as a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes. The drive takes about 1–1.5 h each way, which leaves several hours for a guided walk and lunch. It's one of the best-balanced day trips for road time versus time outside.

Can you climb Toubkal in a day from Marrakech?

Not as a normal day trip. The summit is 4,167 m, and the usual plan is two days from Imlil with a night at the refuge, led by a licensed mountain guide.

Do I need a guide in Imlil?

For short walks around the village, no. For longer routes a local guide is strongly advised, and for Toubkal a licensed mountain guide is required.

How far is Imlil from Marrakech?

About 65 km by road, or 1–1.5 h by car. The last stretch from Asni climbs steadily into the mountains.

Imlil or the Ourika Valley?

Imlil has bigger views and better walking; the Ourika Valley has a waterfall walk, riverside cafés and more crowds. The drive is about the same, so choose by what you want to do once you're there.

What is the Imlil and Kik plateau tour?

It pairs Imlil with the Kik plateau, a high farming plateau in the foothills with wide views of the Atlas. Check the walking time and how long you spend at each place before you book.
