Short answer
The Agafay Desert is a stony plateau about 35 km south-west of Marrakech, near Lalla Takerkoust. It has rocky hills, open views of the Atlas and no sand dunes. Go for a sunset, a camp dinner or a night under the stars when you have one free day. For dunes you need two days (Zagora) or three (Merzouga).
Choose Agafay if you have one afternoon or one night and want desert scenery without hours on the road.
Think twice if sand dunes are the point of your trip: there are none here, whatever the listing photo shows.
Agafay is a reg: rounded hills of rock and gravel, almost no trees, and dirt tracks between camps. The colour shifts from beige at midday to orange and pink in the late afternoon, and on clear days the High Atlas fills the horizon, white with snow in winter.
It is a real desert landscape, but not a sandy one. If you picture camels walking along golden dunes, that image comes from Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, a very different trip. Our comparison of the three deserts shows where each landscape is.
An evening trip usually leaves Marrakech in the afternoon, includes sunset and dinner, and drops you back late. It is enough if you mainly want the view and a meal outside the city.
Staying the night adds the part many people remember best: a dark sky away from city light, a cold, quiet morning and breakfast before the drive back. You lose nothing in daytime plans, since you are back in Marrakech by mid-morning.
Camps range from simple tents with shared toilets to lodges with pools. Listing photos tend to show the pool and the best tent, so read the details instead of the pictures.
If you want quiet, ask whether there is music or a show during dinner and how many guests the camp takes. Some camps are built for parties, others for silence.
Most Agafay camps offer a short camel ride or a quad session on the tracks, sometimes included and sometimes paid on the spot. Neither is the main attraction, so book them only if you actually want them. Quad biking in Marrakech compares Agafay with the Palmeraie.
For a camel ride, look at the animals' condition before getting on and skip it if they look tired or injured. Our camel ride guide lists what to check.
Spring and autumn give mild days and comfortable evenings. In July, afternoon highs around Marrakech reach about 38 °C, so time the trip for sunset. In January, nights drop to about 6 °C in the city and feel colder in the open, so bring a warm layer even if the day was sunny. More in when to go.
Afternoon
Pickup in the city or at a meeting point near your riad, then 45–60 min on the road. Departure times depend on the season and the programme.
Sunset
A walk, a camel or quad ride if included, and the best hour for photos as the stone turns orange.
Evening
Return to Marrakech after dinner, or sleep in the camp and drive back after breakfast the next morning.
Under an hour each way, so it fits in a day otherwise spent in the medina.
Far darker skies than Marrakech, with cold, clear nights in winter.
On clear days the High Atlas rises behind the hills, snow-capped in winter.
No. Agafay is a stony desert of rocky hills and gravel. Photos of tall golden dunes usually show Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, about 560 km from Marrakech.
It is if you want a sunset, a meal and possibly a night in desert scenery without a long drive. It is a letdown if you expect the Sahara. Knowing that in advance makes most of the difference.
About 35 km by road, south-west of the city near Lalla Takerkoust. The drive takes 45–60 min depending on traffic and where your camp is.
If you want the night sky and a quiet morning, yes. If the sunset and dinner are enough, an evening trip returning to Marrakech does the job for less.
On Civitatis, an Agafay night with dinner starts at around €55 per person. Prices vary with the camp, season and what is included, so check the current price for your date.
No. It lies north of the Atlas, far from the Sahara. Tours sometimes call it the Marrakech Sahara, but the nearest Saharan dunes are beyond the mountains, around Zagora and Merzouga.
