Short answer
Yes, if you want the sea and a slower medina, but a day trip only gives you a taste. Essaouira is 185 km from Marrakech, about 2.5–3 h each way, so tours leave you roughly four hours in town. It suits people who like walking, seafood and photography. If you can spare a night, stay over.
Choose it if you want a break from the heat and noise of Marrakech and like wandering without a plan.
Think twice if you're picturing a beach day: the wind is often strong and four hours in town go quickly.
The medina has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2001. It is smaller and flatter than Marrakech's and easy to find your way around, with whitewashed houses, blue shutters and usually less pressure from sellers.
The port is still a working fishing harbour, full of blue wooden boats, nets and gulls. Walk along the sea ramparts, the Skala, for the old cannons and the view over the rocks.
Near the port, stalls sell the day's catch and grill it for you. Agree the price per kilo and what comes with it before they start cooking.
The road covers 185 km across the plains west of Marrakech, about 2.5–3 h each way. Most tours stop at an argan oil cooperative on the way, where you see the nuts cracked and ground by hand and are shown the products. You don't have to buy anything.
You'll probably also pass argan trees with goats standing in the branches. Some of these roadside spots are set up for photos, and a tip is expected if you take one.
Tours usually arrive in the late morning, give you around four hours of free time and leave in the afternoon, reaching Marrakech in the early evening.
This is the easiest day trip to do independently. CTM and Supratours both run coaches between Marrakech and Essaouira, and their stations are a short walk or taxi ride from the medina. Book a seat ahead in busy periods and check the last departure back.
Tours from around €15 per person are mostly transport plus free time, so the difference is convenience rather than content. You won't have a guide in town unless the listing says so.
A grand taxi or private driver costs more but lets you choose the stops and how long you stay.
Bring a windproof layer, even in summer. The temperature by the sea can feel very different from Marrakech.
Essaouira is usually much cooler than Marrakech in summer, which makes it a good escape in July and August. That's also when the wind tends to be strongest, which is why the town draws kitesurfers and windsurfers.
Spring and autumn are mild and often less windy. Winter is cool and can be wet, but the town is quiet. For the inland heat you're escaping, see the monthly climate table.

Yes, if you're happy with a few hours in town. The drive takes about 2.5–3 h each way, so you get roughly four hours to walk the medina, the port and the ramparts and have lunch. If you want to slow down and see the evening light, stay at least one night.
About 185 km by road, or 2.5–3 h by car or coach. Tours often add a stop at an argan cooperative, which makes the trip a little longer.
Yes. CTM and Supratours run daily coaches between the two cities. Check the current timetable and book ahead in busy periods, especially for the last bus back.
You can, but the Atlantic here is cool and the wind often makes the beach uncomfortable. On a day trip, most people spend their time in the medina and at the port instead.
If your schedule allows, one night makes the trip far more relaxed and gives you the town once the day visitors leave. If you only have one free day, the day trip still works.
